How to Plan Your Wedding Day Timeline (With Real Examples That Actually Work)

Wedding Day timeline Planning

When couples start planning their wedding timeline, one of the biggest questions is:

“How much time do we actually need for photos?”

After photographing hundreds of weddings, we’ve found that wedding timelines aren’t about exact times—they’re about realistic time blocks that allow your day to feel relaxed, not rushed.

Below are four real timeline examples we use with our couples, along with guidance on what works best depending on your day.

📸 The Key to a Stress-Free Wedding Timeline

Before we dive into examples, here’s what matters most:

  • Lighting (especially golden hour)
  • Travel time between locations
  • Whether you do a first look or not
  • How much time you want with guests vs. photos

👉 The biggest difference-maker?
Doing a first look vs. not doing one.

✨ Timeline #1: All-In-One Venue WITH a First Look (Most Relaxed Option)

This is hands-down the smoothest, most enjoyable timeline for couples.

Why it works:
You get almost all photos done before the ceremony, so you can actually enjoy cocktail hour.

Wedding Day Sample Timeline:

  • 1:00 PM – Photography begins
(details, getting ready, candids, solo portraits)
  • 2:30 PM – First look + couple portraits + wedding party
  • 3:45 PM – Immediate family photos
  • 4:00 PM – Hide before ceremony
  • 4:30–5:00 PM – Ceremony
  • 5:00–6:00 PM – Cocktail hour
(extended family + you actually attend)
  • 6:00 PM – Reception entrances, cake, speeches
  • 6:30–7:30 PM – Dinner
  • 7:30 PM – First dances
  • 8:00–8:30 PM – Photography coverage ends

👍 Best For:

  • Couples who want a relaxed day
  • More time with guests
  • Less stress and rushing

⛪ Wedding Timeline #2: All-In-One Venue WITHOUT a First Look

This is more traditional—but more condensed.

Trade-off:
You’ll spend most (or all) of cocktail hour taking photos.

Sample Timeline:

  • 2:00 PM – Photography begins
  • 3:30 PM – Separate wedding party photos
  • 4:00 PM – Hide before ceremony
  • 4:30–5:00 PM – Ceremony
  • 5:00–6:00 PM – Cocktail hour
(family photos, wedding party, couple portraits)
  • 6:00 PM – Reception events begin
  • 6:30–7:30 PM – Dinner
  • 7:30 PM – First dances
  • 8:00–8:30 PM – Photo departs

⚠️ Keep in Mind:

  • Little to no time at cocktail hour
  • Faster-paced, more pressure post-ceremony

🚗 Wedding Timeline #3: Hotel + Church + Venue WITH a First Look

This is ideal when you’re getting married in a church but still want a relaxed experience.

Why it works:
You still get portraits done early—before the ceremony.

Sample Timeline:

  • 11:00 AM – Getting ready + first look
  • 1:00 PM – Travel to church
  • 1:30 PM – Arrive
  • 2:00–3:00 PM – Ceremony
  • 3:00–3:30 PM – Family photos
  • 3:45–4:30 PM – Offsite portraits
  • 5:00–6:00 PM – Cocktail hour
    (you actually attend)
  • 6:00 PM – Reception events
  • 6:30–7:30 PM – Dinner
    (optional sunset portraits here)
  • 7:30 PM – First dances
  • 8:00–8:30 PM – Photo departs

🚗 Wedding Timeline #4: Hotel + Church + Venue WITHOUT a First Look

This is the most traditional—and the tightest timeline.

Important: Everything happens after the ceremony.

Sample Timeline:

  • 11:30 AM – Getting ready
  • 1:00 PM – Travel to church
  • 2:00–3:00 PM – Ceremony
  • 3:00–3:30 PM – Family photos
  • 3:45–4:30 PM – Wedding party + couple portraits
  • 5:00–6:00 PM – Cocktail hour
    (limited time to attend)
  • 6:00 PM – Reception begins
  • 6:30–7:30 PM – Dinner
    (optional sunset portraits)
  • 7:30 PM – First dances
  • 8:00–8:30 PM – Photo departs

🌅 Don’t Forget About Golden Hour

Golden hour is the best light of the entire day—soft, flattering, and cinematic.

If your timeline allows:

  • Sneak away for 10–15 minutes during dinner
  • This is when you’ll get your most iconic photos

👉 We always help our couples plan for this based on sunset time.

🧠 What Most Couples Underestimate

From experience, couples often don’t realize:

  • Family photos take 20–30 minutes minimum
  • Travel time always runs longer than expected
  • Not doing a first look = compressed timeline
  • The more rushed your timeline → the more stressful your day feels
